You're so sweet, Kathy. :) I've never read Marsha Canham--I will definitely check her out! I'd have to say that my favorites--as well as the most influential for me--are Diana Gabaldon's and Karen Marie Moning's books.
And I know it's not a romance, but I would also highly recommend Lillian Beckwith's "The Hills is Lonely." It was written in the 1950s and is the author's story of retreating to an island in the Hebrides to recuperate from an illness. There are so many funny, warm, wonderful tales of her life with the islanders--I loved it. Very rich and heart-warming reading.

Some of my favorite Scottish romances are Julie Garwood's "Saving Grace," "The Bride" and "The Wedding." I also loved Monica McCarty's MacLeod trilogy.

I agree! Monica is fantastic!! She does such great research too--she's very knowledgeable about the time period.

I also like Karen Marie Moning's highlander books along with Julie Garwoods Scottish romances, Veronica Wolff's highlander books and some more that I can't think about but when I do I'll post them too.

Romance Readers & Writers Forum and Talk About My Favorite Authors

Oh My YES! I have read all of Karen Marie Moning Highlander books, Julie Garwood's Scottish Romances, Monica McCarthy's trilogy and all but the last Diana Galbalon books and loved them all.
If you ever do decide to check Marsha Canham's books, Pride Of The Lion and The Blood of Roses are read together. It's a 2 part story of the same book. Very detailed with History. I'm sure you would love them. I've read them 3 times, LOL.
I am really enjoying Sword Of The Highland and hating the Campbell. I am on Chapter 23 and will probably finesh tomorrow since I have to work today. I've already looked for Master's at the local Walmart, but it was not there. I suppose I'll go looking for it next week.
Thanks for sharing your favorite books

Kathy, if your favorite books are any indication, I think I'll love those other ones. Will definitely check them out.

Has anyone ever read Dorothy Dunnett? I've had a few people recommend her, but I think I picked her book up at the wrong time and I ended up putting it down. I've been meaning to pick it back up again--any Dunnett readers out there?

My all time favorites are any of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon!

Yup, you and me both, rabdawgs. I even bought the Companion book she wrote. :)

Veronica, I have The Companion book and never read it, Should I? What's it about? I also have A Breath Of Snow and Ashes, but I'm afraid to read it because it seems to take her 7 years to get the next book out. I read the other 4 that lead up to it and found them awesome. What a story. I read the last one in May of 2007 and I'm saving my time on the last (Breath) because I do not want to forget what I've already read before the next one come's out. Does this make any sence?

It absolutely makes sense, Kathy! :) The Outlandish Companion isn't a story. In it, Gabaldon discusses her approach to some of the characters, and gives advice on things like research, or use of accents. If you flip through the pages, you'll know quickly whether or not it's your cup of tea. Take a peek--it's definitely something you can dip in and out of--and you'll see at once what I mean. And I haven't read Breath of Snow and Ashes yet, either. I read a lot of fantasy and do exactly what you're doing! That is, wait until there are a few out there, so I can gobble them all up at once. :)

Thanks Veronica, later today I will take a look through the Companion, but I'm still going to wait a little while longer to read a Breath of Snow and Ashes. I believe it was released in 2005. Maybe I should go to her web site and see if I can mail her to ask when her next might be out.
Amazon still has not even shipped Master of The Highlands yet, boo who!
I hope your having a great day.

LOL--tell that postman to hurry it up! :) Well, you'll have to let me know what you find out about Gabaldon's next one. I don't know how many more of those she's going to be writing, since she's been doing the Lord John mysteries.

Veronica,

I finished Diana Gabaldon's Breath of Snow and Ashes earlier this summer. I am certain that is the final book in that series. It is sad to say goodbye to beloved characters, isn't it?

A suggestion for enjoying the books on another level is to check out the recorded books version of her series. They are narrated by Davina Porter and are absolutely brilliant!!

I look forward to giving your books a try, as I am feeling at a loss for a new series to sink my teeth into. Thanks!!

Hi Linda! What a wonderful suggestion--I will definitely try Gabaldon on CD. I do a lot of Books on Tape and really enjoy it. I do hope you enjoy my books--if you end up giving one a try, you'll have to let me know what you think!

I think the late Arnette Lamb wrote some great books and it was she who started me reading Highland Romance.
"Chieftain", "Highland Rogue", "Border Lord", "Border Bride" and "Threads of Destiny" are all on my bookshelf and much loved.
I know the critics didn't care for her writing, but what do critics know?

Hear hear, Wiccan3! I've never read any of Arnette Lamb's books, but I will definitely need to check her out.

~Sarah~
I love the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I have the Companion book and all of the Lord John books. My favorite writers are Diana Gabaldon, Karen Marie Moning, and Veronica!!!!

ooh, thanks, Sarah! You just made my day!!! :-D Gabaldon and Moning are definitely on my short, short list of faves--I'm so honored!

Well I love the Diana Gabaldon's books and thanks to her blog has led me to Veronica's Books! Veronica I can not wait until the new novel comes out. I also like Karen Marie Moning's books as well. It's funny to call these books romance novel when Both Veronica and Diana have the history behind the story. Also I have learned more Gaelic from Diana's and Veronica's books that I ever would on my own! LOL! I've always had a keene feeling towards Scotland since I was a child and have always wanted to go. Alas my funds will not allow for it but Someday I will live that dream for now, I live vicariously through your books.
Many Thanks!

LOL I just saw the misspelled words in my own post OCH! (LOL!) doing this at work is not good. heh-heh.

Thanks for the awesome post, bttrfly! (Love the pic, btw!) Your "och" totally made me laugh out loud. :) Scotland is hard not to love, isn't it? Though I was a bit of a late-comer. It wasn't until I was in my 20s that I really started to get into the history. And now I can't get enough...
