Sir William Rollo

The man himself!!  After months of research, I finally tracked down what is perhaps the only image of Will Rollo. I owe a tremendous thank-you to Calum Rollo (a Rollo descendent and current resident of Keltie Castle!) for tracking this portrait down for me.  It was painted by George Jamesone (1589-1644), who was considered one of the great portrait artists of his day.

Maggie Walls

This is the monument that gives Felicity such a chill, marking the site where Maggie Walls was burned for witchcraft in 1657.  Visit the Dunning Parish Historical Society for more details.

Keltie Castle

A photo of the seventeenth-century castle that inspired Rollo's daring rescue.  Walls that are nine-feet thick and a dungeon to boot!  Visit the Dunning Parish Historical Society for more details.

Down to the Rothesay Castle prison

A shot taken from my visit to Rothesay Castle, on the isle of Bute, once held by Robert the Bruce.  This ladder leads down to the dungeon and is much like the ladder I imagined in Keltie Castle.

Rothesay Castle prison

This was a very disturbing place to be.  It's cramped, damp, and the place still smells of urine after all these years...  Again, I imagined the Keltie Castle dungeon to be much like this.

musket loop

A picture of a musket loop very similar to one in my book.  This particular hole leads from a guard room in Finlarig Castle.  A guard would've been perched on the other side, ready to shoot any who approached.

nettles

I just had to include a shot of nettles.  You can see why Felicity would be tempted to reach out and grab...

Rollo's countryside

A shot of River Tay in Perthshire.  Clan Rollo hails from hereabouts, and it's some of the most gorgeous, serene countryside in the world.
