Warrior of the Highlands Gallery

More Castle Sween

It was hard to stand there and not imagine MacColla storming up that very hillside.  Or standing at the top, looking out across the water, feeling flush with his triumph.

Castle Sween

Though not featured in Warrior of the Highlands, Castle Sween might have been.  It was captured by MacColla in 1644.  I had the opportunity to visit the ruins, located on the west coast of Argyll.  The perimeter of the castle is still remarkably intact, and I got quite emotional standing on the site of one of MacColla's great victories.

Ruins of Castle Dunyveg

Hanging off the edge of Islay, the Dunyveg (also Dunyvaig) ruins seem ready to shear from the coast at any moment.

Dunyveg Castle

A famous Clan Donald stronghold on the coast of Islay.  MacColla and his family would've considered this a seat of their clan.  The castle was  seized by the Covenanters during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and given to the Campbells.
