Veronica and Monica's Mommy Abandonment Tour 2008

Kildalton grave marker

I loved this image, and found Kildalton to be a very contemplative, evocative stop on the road.

Beach by Laphroaig

Yet another pristine and beautiful Islay beach.  This one is near Laphroaig, the distiller who makes my Favorite Whisky of All Time, the Laphroaig 15-year.  Islay is known for their very peaty malts, and you'll note the peat has turned the fresh water in the foreground brown.  Islay water is remarkably sweet!  The island really is one of my very favorite places in the world.

Dunyveg Castle

Dunyveg (also spelled Dunyvaig) Castle was a famous Clan Donald stronghold on the coast of Islay.  It was seized by the Campbells during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

Dunyveg ruins

Dunyveg clings to the edge of Islay, and it seems ready to shear off at any moment.  Our guide, Iain, walked higher among the ruins, but I played it safe and sat at the base instead.

Lagavulin

Standing with one of my very favorite distilleries, Lagavulin, in the background.  I love very peaty Scotches, and Islay single malts in particular.  The ruins of Dunyveg Castle are ahead and to my right, out of the picture.

V pining in the shadow of Dunyveg

It's impossible to stand in such a spot and remain unmoved.  Just the sight of it makes me long to go back...

Islay beach chapel

Yet another evocative and ruined building on yet another pristine and glorious Islay beach.

Tighnabruaich viewpoint

Monica and me overlooking the Kyles of Bute.

Rothesay Castle

Once held by Robert the Bruce, Rothesay Castle is an enormous compound on the isle of Bute.  It's just what you might imagine when you think of a traditional castle, moat and all!

V beneath the dovecote

Those small squares would've housed the castle's birds, a major food source.
