Yet another pristine and beautiful Islay beach. This one is near Laphroaig, the distiller who makes my Favorite Whisky of All Time, the Laphroaig 15-year. Islay is known for their very peaty malts, and you'll note the peat has turned the fresh water in the foreground brown. Islay water is remarkably sweet! The island really is one of my very favorite places in the world. Dunyveg Castle
Dunyveg (also spelled Dunyvaig) Castle was a famous Clan Donald stronghold on the coast of Islay. It was seized by the Campbells during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Dunyveg ruins
Dunyveg clings to the edge of Islay, and it seems ready to shear off at any moment. Our guide, Iain, walked higher among the ruins, but I played it safe and sat at the base instead. Lagavulin
